'I'm not a scumbag': Mother of jailed brothers speaks outside court

The mother of two brothers jailed for burglary after a library was set on fire and looted during riots in Liverpool has spoken to Sky News outside court.

Trudi Wharton said she had been "praying" for her sons and was relieved with the sentences, adding: "I was expecting longer."

She said they just got "carried away" and their behaviour was "very out of character", adding: "We've never had riots before."

"It's heartbreaking. It's very, very heartbreaking," she said.

"They lost their dad six years ago so I haven't got the support of him either. I've got a lot of disabilities and both my sons are very helpful to me. Very helpful.

"It's going to be awful - a really, really big struggle. And it's not nice the people may look at me because they're my children. And I'm not a scumbag to be honest.

"You know I just like keep myself to myself."

Asked what she would say to anyone considering getting involved in disorder, she said: "Stay in. Don't do it.

"Don't let no one peer pressure you. Listen to your elders, parents or grandparents. Listen to the older ones because they know. Because this isn't going to resolve nothing."

That's all for this evening

We're pausing our live coverage of the riots across the UK for this evening.

Before we go, here's a reminder of the key events from today:

  • Sir Keir Starmer told his ministers and police chiefs they need to "maintain high alert" for further riots;
  • A suspended Labour councillor was arrested after allegedly telling a protest that fascists needed to have their throats cut;
  • The last remaining girl injured in the Southport stabbings was released from hospital, meaning all children hurt in the attack have now been released;
  • Police are bracing for more far-right protests this weekend, ourcrime correspondent Martin Bruntlearned;
  • Two men who took part in riots in Liverpool were each sentenced live on camera to 32 months for violent disorder;
  • A 55-year-old woman was arrested in relation to a social media post Cheshire Police says contained "inaccurate information" about the identity of the Southport attacker.

Analysis: 'Relief' in Downing Street after far-right protesters stay off streets

There's "little doubt" that Downing Street is feeling "relief" that last night's major far-right riots failed to materialise, says our political correspondent Darren McCaffrey.

There was "genuine concern" in the government earlier this week that yesterday could have seen a "massive flare up of violence", he says.

"Clearly that has not happened. But the word from that COBRA meeting attended by the prime minister, senior police officers and senior ministers tonight is not to let up and that they remain on high alert."

There is "real hope" that yesterday may have marked a "turning point" in the violence, McCaffrey adds.

He says politicians "across the board" are asking questions about how social media played a part in inflaming the tensions and what brought people to the streets - but tonight's emergency meeting remained focused on praise for the police and staying alert to further violence.

Man jailed a day after posting offensive comment online

A man who posted racially aggravated and threatening content on social media has been jailed just one day later, Cumbria Police said.

Billy Thompson, 31, from Maryport, was charged and appeared in court today after being arrested yesterday.

North Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard how Thompson posted a racially aggravated and offensive comment on a Facebook post announcing a dispersal order in Carlisle yesterday, according to police.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison today after admittingan offence under section 127 of the Communications Act.

Chief Superintendent Carl Patrick said he hoped the "swift charge and sentencing sends a clear message" to anyone thinking of committing a similar act.

"This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and will continue to carry out this proactive policing approach," he said.

'Refugees welcome': Dozens attend anti-racism rally at Stormont

Crowds gathered at the parliament buildings in Belfast today to oppose the rioting seen across the city in the past week.

Dozens of people showed their support for the Stand Against Racism Unite in Hope and held banners reading "refugees welcome" and "hate is never the answer".

It comes as the Northern Ireland Assembly is recalled to discuss the recent violent disorder.

Michelle O'Neill, first minister of Northern Ireland, said there was "no place for racism" in the region.

Teenager who joined riots on 18th birthday sentenced

A teenager who took part in the Hartlepool riots while out for his 18th birthday has been sentenced.

Bobby Shirbon, who is from the town, was involved in two nights of violent disorder last week.

On 31 July - his birthday - he smashed windows and threw bricks and bottles at police.

The teen, wearing a balaclava and joined by other youths, then threw beer bottles at a police van the following night.

Teesside Crown Court heard that Shirbon told police "it's okay, everybody else is doing it", when he was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of violent disorder and has been detained for 20 months.

Manchester police want to identify these 15 men after weekend unrest

Greater Manchester Police has released images of 15 men it wants to identify following violent disorder across the county over the weekend.

The force has released pictures of five men it wants to speak to as part of its probe into unrest in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre on Saturday.

Hundreds of people headed to the gardens fora protest entitled "Stand Up For Your Country: Enough is Enough", with counter-protesters also attending, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Police are also looking to identify the following 10 people as part of their investigation into disorder in Bolton town centre on Sunday:

Anyone who recognises the people pictured is being urged to get in touch with Manchester Police, call 101, or submit information anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Watch: Rioter jailed over Liverpool disorder

Footage has been released of the arrest of a man jailed today for his involvement in the riots in Liverpool.

William Morgan, 69, was among a group of around 100 people who set fire to bins, threw bricks, damaged local businesses, and set fire to other buildings in County Road, in the Walton area of the city.

He was jailed earlier today for 32 months for violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon

The judge said he had resisted arrest "with such force" that it took three officers to detain him.

20:36:23

Starmer: Police must maintain high alert

Sir Keir Starmer has told his ministers and police chiefs they need to "maintain high alert" despite last night's anticipated wave of far-right unrest failing to materialise.

Sky News understands that was the prime minister's main message from tonight's COBRA meeting - his third of the week.

Sir Keir thanked the police and wider criminal justice system, saying the high levels of policing in key areas last night helped deter rioters - as did the swift sentencing of those convicted so far.

20:14:01

PM thanks police and local leaders 'for keeping communities safe'

Sir Keir Starmer was in the West Midlands earlier before returning to London for tonight's COBRA meeting.

The PM visited a mosque in Solihull, and has just put out a post on X thanking local leaders he met there - and the police - for "keeping our communities safe".

Our team have spotted cabinet ministers leaving the COBRA meeting in the last few minutes, so hopefully we'll get an update on what was discussed from Downing Street before too long.

We'll bring it to you if and when we do.
