As for Hyun Bin's casting, he said, "Because he is a real person and a great historical hero, he cannot help but feel pressured. I needed an actor with physical strength who could withstand hard roles, but I thought Hyun Bin was Ahn Jung-geun. He showed deep trust, saying, "I knew I would hold out and overcome it."
In addition, director Woo said that it must have been difficult for the actors because they filmed in the extreme cold of minus 40 degrees Celsius, adding, "There were days when I took one cut a day. When the actors rehearsed, the mud and snow not only hit the pants but also the underwear, so it must have been hard to wait while enduring it. I felt especially sorry for Hyun Bin," he said.
"After the rehearsal, it was the day of the shoot, but I didn't like it. I asked the martial arts director to do rehearsals again, and he asked me who I was taking with him. So I said, "I need Ahn Jung-geun." I even remember hurting my back because I had an action rehearsal with Hyun Bin all day long. You've endured it well, so I'm more grateful."
